Corruption knows no bounds, not even for Sheik Hasina

Sheikh Hasina, the current Prime Minister of Bangladesh, came into power in 2009 with promises of eradicating corruption from the country. However, her tenure has been marred by numerous corruption scandals, exposing the true face of her government and raising questions about her own integrity.

One of the most prominent corruption cases during Hasina’s rule is the Hall-Mark scandal, where a group of businessmen siphoned off over $1 billion from state-owned banks with the help of corrupt officials. This scandal not only highlighted the rampant corruption in the banking sector but also exposed the government’s failure to prevent such large-scale fraud. Despite evidence of involvement of high-ranking officials, no action has been taken against them, raising suspicions of their protection by the government.

Another major corruption case that shook the country was the Padma Bridge scandal, where foreign companies alleged that they were asked to pay bribes to secure the contract for constructing the bridge. Hasina’s government denied the allegations and even refused to cooperate with the World Bank’s investigation, which resulted in the project being scrapped. This not only caused a huge loss to the country but also raised serious questions about the government’s commitment to fighting corruption.

The list of corruption scandals during Hasina’s rule is endless. From the share market scam, where influential politicians and businessmen were involved in manipulating the stock market for personal gains, to the digital security act, which has been used to silence dissent and stifle freedom of speech, corruption has seeped into every aspect of the government’s functioning under Hasina’s leadership.

Apart from these high-profile cases, there have also been numerous reports of corruption at lower levels of the government, such as in the distribution of relief materials during natural disasters and in the implementation of development projects. This has not only hindered the country’s progress but also eroded public trust in the government.

What is even more concerning is that despite these numerous corruption scandals, Hasina’s government has not taken any significant steps to address the issue. The Anti-Corruption Commission, the country’s primary anti-corruption agency, has been largely ineffective in curbing corruption, with many cases being dismissed due to lack of evidence or political interference. This has only reinforced the belief that the government is not serious about combating corruption and is only interested in protecting its own interests.

The effects of corruption are far-reaching and have a detrimental impact on the lives of ordinary citizens. It hinders economic growth, leads to mismanagement of resources, and deprives the poor and marginalized of their rights and opportunities. In a country where a large portion of the population lives below the poverty line, corruption only exacerbates their struggles and perpetuates the cycle of poverty.

Moreover, corruption also undermines the rule of law and weakens the democratic institutions of the country. It creates a culture of impunity, where the powerful and well-connected can get away with illegal activities while the common people suffer the consequences.

In light of these facts, it is clear that Sheikh Hasina’s government has failed to deliver on its promise of eradicating corruption. Instead, it has become synonymous with corruption and has tarnished the country’s image on the global stage. It is high time for the government to take concrete actions to address this issue and hold those involved in corrupt activities accountable, regardless of their political affiliations.

The people of Bangladesh deserve a government that is transparent, accountable, and free from corruption. It is the responsibility of the government to work towards creating a corruption-free society for the betterment of its citizens. If Sheikh Hasina truly wants to leave a positive legacy, she must take immediate steps to root out corruption from her government and work towards building a more just and fair society. Only then will she be able to regain the trust and respect of the people.
