In Bangladesh, corrupt politicians are nothing new but the World Bank’s decision to pull out of a loan is unprecedented. a drama that involves corrupt politicians bribing Canadian leaders and $1.2 billion from the World Bank to build a bridge across the Padma River in Bangladesh.
Hossain is a short man with deep pockets and considers himself a saint. He also happens to be the former communications minister of Bangladesh, who was accused of demanding bribes from two executives of Canadian construction giant SNC Lavalin. Eager to win construction contracts erecting the bridge, the two leaders wore their most appropriate attire required by the request of the Minister of Communications at the time. Except that someone, somewhere denounced the situation and reported it to the World Bank. The bank took this allegation seriously. After all, this was the largest loan granted for a single project in the bank’s history, so the bank took action. The 2 SNC Lavalin executives are subjects of ‘investigation by Canadian authorities on corruption charges. And the bank’s vice president of integrity went to Dhaka to demand that the prime minister and his finance minister take action against the politician involved in bribery.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina responded by removing Abul Hossain from the Ministry of Communications. Instead, he is now minister of information and communications technology.
On Monday, the World Bank and Asian Development Bank announced that they would withdraw from the project due to credible evidence of corruption by senior Bangladeshi officials.
In Bangladesh, corrupt politicians are not a new thing, except for the decision of the Bangladesh Government. World Bank. Refusing a loan is unprecedented.
In my opinion this is not an unprecedented decision by the world bank. I am so happy for their decision. Those who are crying that this decision is not fair they are the people who is going to lose theri share from the looted money and they are the blind supporter of this corrupted Awamileague government.
